Life on the Border

This is life on the border –
Make no mistake.
Relax
If you find time,
         Then quickly awake.
When the natives are restless we let them eat cake.
(When the argument is senseless I’d rather have steak)
We got biscuits in the breadbox,
                And gravy to warm.
But neighbors
close their door locks
to keep out the storm.
People wear blinders,
wild animals run free.
       When I am chased
by border finders
I don’t know which is me.
This is life on the border –
make no mistake.
We lose part of ourselves
with each one they take.
